We had the chance to visit their home which literally lies in a graveyard. It is the most unsettling situation of poverty I’ve seen in my life… Hundreds of families and young children living in the slums in small humble “homes” the size of an american walk in closet… yet built on top of the dead.

The city has counted over 500 families living in 329 structures spanning over 9000 square meters. It’s been used as a cemetery as far back as 1912 yet poverty has forced families to build structures on top of tombs, some even using the tombs as beds inside the shanties.

As we walked for about 15 minutes into the community, we arrived at the home of this sweet family. We had an opportunity to pray for this woman, a mother of 6. After spending time with their family, we asked what her dreams were & how we could pray for her. Her simple response was “I pray that one day we could own a home, and that we could have electricity.”

I believe that her dreams can come true because of Compassion. Her eldest son, Jeffrey (13), is fortunate enough to attend the Compassion project at their local church. Compassion is changing the lives of currently 711 kids in this community by showing them the love of Jesus and giving them an education, as well as much needed access to medical care for their entire family. The greatest thing is it’s not even under the banner of Compassion…. they’ve empowered the local church to reach their community in an astounding way. And they’re doing it all across the globe through the local church.

If you sponsor a child through Compassion, be encouraged – you’ll never know the impact you’re making.

Somehow, in the gravest of circumstances, these children have joy.

Even in death, Jesus is life. In the darkness, He is light

Ben here… I want to take a minute to update you on a trip we’re getting ready to take over the thanksgiving holiday. We’ll be leaving November 28 for 10 days in The Philippines! We’ve been grateful to build relationships this past year with new friends in 2 great organizations – Student Life & Compassion International. We’re so excited to see these two merge as we’re partnering together for the trip!

For a while now Chris, Josh & myself, along with our wives, have sponsored children overseas through Compassion. We’ve been huge believers in their programs and initiatives changing the lives of children across the globe. Now we’re going to have the chance to go see it first hand!

We have a way that YOU CAN BE INVOLVED! I’m so excited that for the first time I’ll get to meet Ella, our 6 year old little girl my wife and I sponsor. If you are interested – there are 5 young children in the area in need of a sponsor. If you’d like to sign up to sponsor them we can actually take a gift over for you and hand it to them ourselves! If that’s something you’re interested in simply click here to learn more about the children and how you can help!

Make sure to let us know if you decide to sponsor a child… Thanks so much for your support and prayers as we go!

-Ben

I wanted to drop a little note to tell everybody about some sweet drums that I’ve had the privilege of playing since the summer. Final Cry Custom Drums is a company out of Dallas, TX. I heard about Final Cry while we were touring with Rapture Ruckus (a pop rock / hip hop band out of New Zealand). The more I found out about them, the more I wanted to play them. I met the founder of Final Cry, Todd Shaw, earlier this year and was pleased to see that not only do they make great sounding drums, but this company has a heart for ministry and relationships. Great drums and great people! If you’re a drummer out there make sure to check them out on Facebook!

Also – Click Here to check out an interview I did with Final Cry and see more about my drum kit!

Ben here…. Thanks for checking in on the website! It’s been a busy but incredible summer for The Museum. We played 42 dates in June & July and felt like we were able to meet some new friends and build some great new relationships! Here’s a little update on where we’ve been the past 2 months…

We finished out July with 2 weeks at Camp Electric. It’s a worship and rock & roll camp for some of the most promising young musicians in the country ages 13 – 19. It was certainly one of our summer highlights… In addition to leading worship each morning & night at camp, we were able to teach breakout classes each afternoon. Ben taught vocals & Josh, Chris & Geoff taught their respective instruments.

We feel like God has grown us a lot as a band the past few years and it was cool to be able to share that with young musicians and worship leaders. It really seemed to open up our hearts to reach out to the next generation of worship leaders and gave us a humbling opportunity to encourage them. Thanks to Camp Electric for this special opportunity!

The only downside was that Chris got run over by a golf cart… long story

Chris after falling under the golf cart!

In June we were able to have our first experience serving at 2 weeks of Student Life Camp.

In 2005, fresh out of college I was an associate youth pastor at a church in San Antonio. We took our students to Student Life that summer at Louisiana Tech University and I was able to see first hand the amazing work God was doing through this organization. I prayed at that time that God would give me an opportunity one day to lead worship at their camps. 6 years later we were able to come in and lead at that very same camp in Louisiana!

It’s weeks like those we experienced at Student Life that keep us encouraged as a band. Hundreds of lives changed, as well as numerous students accepting Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. It will never get old seeing students lives turn around as they surrender to Jesus. It’s a humbling reminder that God doesn’t need us, but chooses to use us to draw people into his presence.

We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve at Student Life. We’ll be taking a trip in partnership with Student Life & Compassion International to The Philippines later this year, as well as returning for camps in Missouri & Chicago in 2012!

These were just a couple of highlights. We had a great time spending a week with our new friends at Kamp Kingsland in Texas as well as numerous festivals such as J103′s JFEST, Atlanta Fest, Night Vision Colorado, Restore Fest Joplin, Creation East Festival & More. It was awesome to spend a week with our long time friends in San Antonio from Coker UMC as we worshipped and helped repair tornado damage in Tuscaloosa!
